Our history
Village to Village was founded in March 2004 by a multiethnic group of
Olympia-area teachers, parents, students, administrators and college
instructors who specialize in multicultural education. As educators and
parents, we are concerned with the fact that American schools today are
in many cases as ethnically segregated as they were 30 years ago
(Harvard University Civil Rights Project, 2002). Segregation has
negative implications for our economy and perpetuates unequal access to
educational and job opportunities. Most personally, it keeps us from
truly knowing--and hopefully developing compassion for--people unlike
ourselves. Village to Village was created to fill this gap. We provide opportunities for students to experience diversity, learn skills to help them succeed in diverse situations, and learn the histories of the different people present in our communities using the voices of youth and adults from those communities as resources. All our events feature time for students to practice multicultural communication, time to socialize and form bonds with other students, and education about the histories of different people in our communities. We actively collaborate with the communities we are visiting in order to give students the most accurate and respectful information about the issues facing that community as possible.
