speak

A JOINT PRESENTATION OF VILLAGE TO VILLAGE, UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY, and THE WASHINGTON STATE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
Students from six high schools and community organizations planned and performed in this celebration of the life and work of Dr. King. Participants were asked to read some of Dr. King's work beyond the most famous "I Have A Dream" speech, and to create a performance sharing their thoughts on how his wide range of writings are relevant in today's world.

Performances included a presentation on "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," a reading of "Beyond Vietnam," and an original "I Have a Dream" song. Students also recited poetry like "Why Did You Make Me Black, Lord?", spoke on the intersection of race and queerness, and presented information on important people from the Civil Rights movement.

Participants included students from: Avanti High School, Black Hills High School, Timberline High School, Tumwater High School, Olympia High School, The Institute for Community Leadership, and Stonewall Youth.
This event was made possible by a grant from the The Community Foundation.
